That would mark two years since I started writing this column for The Community Press. June 18, we were informed that The Community Press, The Trentonian and The County Weekly News will all end after the June 25 issues come out. The publisher, Postmedia, has made this decision as it adapts to change in the media landscape, changing reader habits, and the increases in costs to print and distribute publications.

There is considerable irony in this development for me. I started writing this column to reach the many people who are not online. Not just people of greater years (or as a friend of mine likes to say, “levels”… “Level 67” sounding far more bad-ass than 67 years old), but also people of younger years/lower levels who shun online platforms. Now with this development, it seems that the only publishing option remaining is online! The loss of a local paper is a significant and sad event. It will mark the first time in a long time – 133 years to be exact – that Marmora will have no local paper. I am happy to have been a part of this history but I am deeply disappointed at this turn of events.

One last chance to update you: at the Council meeting on June 16, Mayor Jan O’Neill made a strong statement about a councillor’s recent resignation and the concerns that led to it. She thanked the councillor for her service. She stated that council categorically rejects any suggestion that it either collectively or individually has failed to conduct its business in accordance with applicable legislation and established procedures or principles of good governance. She assured residents of accountability, transparency and legislative measures in effect to ensure appropriate action and noted that every councillor takes their Oath of Office seriously.

Council formally declared a vacancy on council and chose to fill it by appointing the next highest-placed candidate who ran for councillor in the 2022 Municipal Election. If the first runner-up is unable or unwilling to be appointed, the clerk would move on to the next highest-placed candidate and so-on. This is likely the fastest way to fill the vacancy. The appointment could possibly take place at the next meeting of council on July 7.

The other significant decision made at the June 16 meeting invloves renovations to Marmora Town Hall. The exterior stairs on the front of the building are rusting and rotting and besides being plain ugly they present a safety hazard. They will be removed, new metal support and railing for the balcony will be installed and the second floor metalwork and door will be painted.

That’s it readers. Thanks to you for your comments, critcisms, questions and suggestions over the last two years. I am gratified that you found some value in this column. I will continue to write – even if I am limited to an online platform – because I am determined to keep you informed.

Even out of print, Marmora matters!

My final scheduled article should appear on Thursday June 25.
